From March 2026, the Socialist Party will be campaigning as Solidarity – the socialist alternative.
Our social media presence, website, publications and banners on demonstrations will reflect this, with a new logo and new vibrant colours.
We chose the name ‘solidarity’ because in this era of genocidal, ecocidal capitalism, and the fascist threat, solidarity as a concept and a practice is needed now more than ever as the antidote to the capitalist despair around us.
Here in the north, solidarity has a particular commitment to overcoming the sectarian divide. The parties in Stormont have shown time and time again that they can’t break with sectarianism and are in fact dependent on it to justify their own existence. Real change here will only come about by the working class and oppressed from all communities united in struggle against a system that offers only division and austerity under different flags.
As well as changing our name, we are also excited to unveil a new logo which we will be using going forward;
The red flag – one of the oldest symbols of socialist struggle – symbolising our continued commitment to international working class struggle in the fight against capitalism, combined with the display inside it of a head of wheat alongside a rose – calling back to the powerful symbol of the struggle of women workers throughout history, bread & roses. The wheat is symbolic of the material needs we require to survive, alongside the rose, to symbolise the nourishment of the soul, of love and care.
As we see an increase in misogynistic, racist and queerphobic ideas being spread online by the far-right and combined with attacks on bodily autonomy and Queer and women’s rights by right-wing governments here and internationally, a socialist feminist analysis and approach is critical in linking with all struggles against oppression in the fight to overthrow the chains of capitalist oppression.
Socialist feminism means recognising that our struggle to end gender violence, racism, transphobia and all oppression must by necessity be an anti-capitalist struggle; because the system not only benefits in various ways from divisions amongst us, but also because capitalism is inherently exploitative, divisive and violent. Changing the entire system requires active movements of solidarity and struggle of working-class people of all genders.
In campaigning as Solidarity – the socialist alternative, we also indicate our commitment to working with others in the trade union, feminist, Queer, student and Palestine solidarity movements, including to build new political representation for a genuinely left, anti-capitalist and anti-sectarian position in a mass socialist party that could really help organise resistance and an alternative to the political establishment. Within any such movements, we will be building a Marxist revolutionary socialist alternative and challenge — one that is rooted in international solidarity, struggle of the exploited and oppressed, and the socialist alternative, worldwide.
